A 9-hour day from the coast to Actun Tunichil Muknal in the Cayo District, with transfers, park entry fees, lunch and about four hours at the cave.
Updated 2 November 2026
The ATM cave tour from Belize City runs 9 hours and starts from $260 per person. The operator includes a meet and greet, round-trip air-conditioned transfers, tour gear with helmet and light, park entry fees and a local Belizean lunch with a beverage. The cave is nowhere near the coast: NICH lists the location as Teakettle Village, Cayo District, and San Ignacio, the town most tours leave from, lies 67 miles west of Belize City, so a solid part of the day is road time in each direction.
Two amounts sit outside the from-price. Government tax GST at US$25 per person is payable on the tour date, and a supplement might apply if the final group size is less than 4. Island transfers are not included, because the tour starts from Belize City; travellers coming off Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker arrange the flight or water taxi themselves, or take a departure built for the islands.
Going in on a tour is the only way in. NICH policy requires every visitor to be on a guided visit arranged in advance through a licensed tour operator, and Actun Tunichil Muknal is the one NICH site with no public ticket price on the official ticketing portal, which states that tickets are sold only by licensed operators. Access is widely reported to be capped at 125 visitors per day across all licensed operators, so dates do sell out. Groups stay small: a maximum of six visitors per ATM-certified guide, with larger parties split between guides.
What waits at the end of the walk is a dry upper chamber holding 14 sets of human skeletal remains, the best known the calcified Crystal Maiden, from ritual use dated by NICH to the Early Classic Period, A.D. 300-600. National Geographic ranked it the world's number one sacred cave. All cameras and electronic devices have been banned inside since May 2012 by government rule, after a dropped camera damaged a skeleton, so visitors enter empty-handed and only the guide carries a dry bag. Footwear comes off in the artifact chambers and socks are compulsory, a modest dress code applies, and photo ID is required.
The mainland transfer option: 9 hours, round-trip air-conditioned transfers, park entry fees, gear and a Belizean lunch, rated ★ 4.9 (29 reviews).

The table mixes two kinds of day. The 9-hour tour on this page and the 10-hour private Actun Tunichil Muknal departure both go inside the cave with a licensed ATM guide; the three cave tubing trips float a river cave and, in two cases, add the Maya site of Altun Ha, without entering Actun Tunichil Muknal or its burial chamber. Take a tubing day if you have half a day in the city or do not fancy a 45-minute hike and swimming in the dark, and one of the two ATM options if the Crystal Maiden is the reason you came to Belize.

Access to the cave is reported to be capped at 125 visitors a day across all licensed operators, and heavy rain in the May to November wet season can close it, as the Institute of Archaeology did on 18 October 2026 before reopening the next morning. Put this day near the start of your stay and keep a spare day after it.
