What this ATM cave tour includes

This ATM cave tour is the most reviewed day on the site: 9 hours in total, from $145 per person, ★ 5.0 (1507 reviews). It starts at the operator's main office at 19 Burns Avenue in San Ignacio, between Tandoor Restaurant and Belize Bank, and the trailhead is a 45-minute drive from there.

Transport from that office is included, along with a specially licensed guide, helmet, headlamps and life jackets, a 3-hour walking tour of the cave system and a homemade picnic lunch with a drink once the group is back at the vehicles. Hotel pickup is arranged only if you ask for it, and gratuities are not included.

Inside, the dry upper chamber holds stoneware, ceramics and altars along with the calcified Crystal Maiden and the remains of 13 other men, women and children. National Geographic ranked Actun Tunichil Muknal the world's number one sacred cave. Footwear comes off in the artifact chambers, socks are compulsory, and no cameras or electronic devices have been allowed inside since the government rule of May 2012, after a dropped camera damaged a skeleton: the guide carries the only dry bag.

Book this one early in your Belize trip. Access to the reserve is capped at 125 visitors a day across all licensed operators, dates sell out, and heavy rain between May and November can close the cave for a day, so a spare day after the tour is worth keeping.

The day step by step

  1. Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM)
Actun Tunichil Muknal means Cave of the Stone Sepulchre, and it was a ceremonial site where the Maya made offerings and sacrifices during long droughts. The cave is geologically striking, with crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, and it works as a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts and a burial place. The guides on this tour have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, British High Commission and US Embassy visitors inside. The site is reached by a 45-minute drive from the operator's office in San Ignacio.
  2. Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, the hike and three hours underground 300 min
Vehicles enter Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and park at the ranger post, and everything after that is on foot: roughly 45 minutes of hiking through the jungle to the cave entrance. Access is by water, swimming across a small spring-fed pool and wading into the underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers that ends in the ceremonial chamber with the stoneware, the ceramics and the crystallized skeleton of the Crystal Maiden. The group spends about 3 hours in the cave with the guide, then hikes back out to the vehicles for a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before the drive to San Ignacio. The operator rates the difficulty moderate: the swimming is easy, life jackets are provided for non-swimmers, and a guide escorts them.
